Two weeks ago GBS Detroit welcomed the Ypsilanti, Mi based band “Lawless Carver” to Groovebox Studios to record their live session. Behind the scenes GBS also welcomed the “Moon Mic” creator Dave Gaynier and his wonderful sub kick microphone. GBS used the microphone on the outer shell of their Tama Star Classic Bubinga kick drum while also enlisting the help of an Electro-Voice Re-320 inside the shell to capture the beater. The signals were then combined in Digital Performer 7 running at 44.1 32 bit. For mixing, we used the Universal Audio Studer a800 plugin and a Universal Audio La-2a plugin and that all it took for this awesome kick drum sound.
Look up the Moon Mic online. It’s a fabulous piece of gear that totally helped my kick drum sit and sound exactly where I wanted it with no EQ whatsoever.
